often overlooked in american techno history are the weird and wonderful flavours to have emanated from the mid-west over the years. no two finer exponents have there been than minnesotas paul birken and freddy fresh. their contributions date back to the early nineties when freddy was exploring the possibilities of extreme techno (via labels like labworks, experimental and his own analog) - an activity that paul took up a while later after debuting on woody mcbrides renegade communique label in 1996. teaming up for the first of two collaborations on this 12 inch, paul and freddy open with >the fate of thirty eight< - a belting slab of analogue techno, where machines shriek and squawk like possessed animals on the loose.

breakbeat paradise recordings is proud to introduce yet another talented artist to the bbp crew. dj rudd is an established dj and producer from latvia, where he is leading the funky breaks/mashup scene, doing shows with names like a-skillz, featurecast, nightmare on wax to name a few. rudds oldskool type of funky breaks was a perfect match for bpp, who was quick to get rudd on board, when they first heard rudds successful funky breakout ep on bigm records. this became the beginning of a prosperous teamwork set out to design this amazing ep of 4 state-of-the-art funky bangers. track by track and sample by sample they worked their way through, in order for this ep to be as great as possible. the result is nothing less than a masterpiece of classic funky breaks - with all the right elements including well-balanced use of modern day wobble basslines.

for signal life #03, we teamed up two young vigorous south londoners: mr. louis carnell, known by his moniker visionist, and mr. marco giuliani, who works under the alias last japan. >control this< by visionist combines his background in south london grime with his signature drum machine template and lo-fi vocal excerpts into a coherent mesh. our favourite visionist track to date! when we first heard >storm trooper< by last japan, it was the tension we got caught up in. the song is focused with a clear direction, uncommon in most young talent, armed with a driving snare-fill rhythm reminiscent of south rap and all that exiting stuff in the 160 bpm. i believe murky is the correct term. we predict interesting things for mr. giuliani.

before the release of his debut album on ki, monokle throws in an ep to show us what to expect. the beautiful track >swan< pretty much describes perfectly what monokle means when he says that simple rhythms and catchy beats get him bored quickly. being influenced by the music of the british imprint warp for example, the sankt petersburg based artist has pretty much developed his own interpretation of well, what should it be called? it is monokle! he has his very own aesthetic approach to music and has a very fine hand for sublime melodies and atmospheres. on the b side he teams up with his friend and partner milinal. >swan< gets a proper retouch by daisuke tanabe, who shares monokles deep soundscapes and is just the right member of the ki family to get his hands on this ep.

the second of two eps from talented californian newcomer, tyler friedman, has now arrived. a night in the woods ep starts of as a murky rhythmic experiment. when released of its bound, it transforms into a hailstorm of sound that builds in melodic intensity towards a final climax. this is scenic and brave electronic dancemusic that over and over again will capture the focused listener. on the b-side rivet for sure push tyler towards berghain. but now the tool is somewhat different. rivet transforms the cinematic original into a very dirty and dry party stomper.

the smugglers inn has become a unique testing ground for new artists and productions and many of todays highly rated new school producers benefited from early support on the show as well as behind the scenes a+r advice from daniel when approached by record labels after being featured on the show.with a network of talent to draw from, it seemed a logical step to start a record label so this is the first release from what promises to be an interesting series of eclectic, dancefloor focussed musical endeavours from an all-star international cast.

4th release by 12records, presenting the new deep88 >removing dust< ep (taken from the forthcoming >removing dust< album that will be released later on this year). main single is a2 >the vibe<, a classic 90s beat made over a real melody, where vocals parts crossover and match each others, in two differents peaks, to create a whole >vibe< flow from the start till the end of the song. a1 is a test signal experiment, where samples take a different level, a sort of meta sample, a sample into a sample… well, have a listen, its easier to understand that way. bside is 3 tracks long, not a common practice in todays ep releases. b1 >grancartridge<, a moodymann house style raw song, b2 is even more raw sampling style, meanwhile b3 is a dreamy vocal house tune more common to deep88s style. the result is a mature ep, that ntroduces the 2nd deep88 album, always on 12records, and that will bring him into that >serious< realm of making house that is seen in some elite today (funny isn’t it… at the end it is just about music and we all have ears… maybe)... btw less marketing on our head, this 12inch wont be a coloured or hand written limited release, just the good old classic black one (yes it sounds better folks) and no limited copies… when is close to finish we will repress as usual.

icu boy n dread has been making some serious waves of late and when you hear his music, it doesn’t take long to understand why. his debut here on smokin sessions is soulful and beautifully engineered. clean crisp highend frequencies tickle your ear drums and the low end cuts through with a weighty punch. all 3 tracks have been supported by the deep heads page and had a very positive response.

preceding a full length album on 4lux, ka§par showcases his amazing talents on this second ep for 4lux. the portuguese producer comes with some of the most interesting dance music around. got good love is a tough deep house groover that comes as both original and with a nicholas remix. cruising andromeda is a futuristic techno tune for forward thinking deejays. on hyphen kaspar slows down the pace and tosses in some 707 action: a crazy ride with rough synths and spaced out effects. ka§pars releases have become rare and sought after, releasing little more than one 12inch a year in the recent past when one listens to the result, it only proves how great things take their time.

one of the most anticipated comebacks on local talk is finally here! their debut on local talk >moody< caused a big stir on the house charts and made the #01 at traxsource deep house 100 and still gets praise from djs all over the globe including karizma, steve bug, joey negro, the revenge and kerri chandler. the dynamic duo is now back with a even stronger ep doing what they do best, delivering two stunning vocal house tracks. the reaction mad mats & tooli got when they heard >trapped!< was unanimous -­- tune alert! using a colonel abrams acapella from 1985 and fusing it with a jacking track that retains the spirit of the dirtytwo sound & can only cause one thing, dancefloor mayhem. on the flip is >i m feelin< - a slighty more modern house burner that features old friend and pre dirtytwo fame spanka! vocalist frosche.

foam fangs could be a term used to describe silks preferred take on that too-easily dismissed 70s dancefloor dementia of disco – the soft bite, love nibble, mirrorball on steady/ready perma-revolve. jesse reiner (jonas reinhardts first mister, alongside past/part-time collaborators like phil manley of trans am and damon palermo of mi ami/magic touch), who never quite had the kranky krinkle of his ohm-ambient labelmates, travels head-on, tomorrowland-style, through long-form cosmic moroder constellations of >foam fangs<. nothing frothy about it, though there is a bit of the rubbery in reiner’s bounce-about, cool, funky kraut-disco. suddenly we are beaming back to a time when the world looked forward, envisioning a 21st century decked with silver, chrome, and neoprene. it is a sonic space both transparent and shiny, the metallic ding and cold ribbon of data, scrolling through infinite space. the opener, >foam fangs<, transports us instantly into an ever-expanding universe of sound and light at once fanning out and folding in on itself. variations on that theme continue as the jonas journey oscillates through the beat-beyond.

we keep the good-times rolling along on the kolour mothership with the debut ep of deep-disco don debonair. we have been taking notes on this guy since we heard his first tune and ever-since, he just seems to move from strength to strength with each tune that is released. needless to say, when the opportunity arose for us to debut his first full-on solo ep, it was the epitome of a no-brainer for us. debonair shows us all facets of his musical capability with a melting pot of music ranging from the traditional debonair deep-disco sound to slo-mo beat-down business, deep-fused funk, with a dash of beautiful baleric sprinkles for good measure.

following on from torquato and boghosians acclaimed debut on yoruba is this, a selection of remixes diverse and interesting enough to do justice to the original lp, which received praise for the rich tapestry of musical sources it drew influence from. first up, afefe iku delivers a much deeper, weightier version of paradice laden with heavy synth stabs and woody percussive elements. aybee takes when u touch me - probably the standout club track on the original lp – into much deeper realms, stripping back the original groove . its remarkably simple but flawlessly executed, the chord motif working effortlessly alongside the crisp hats. atone tackles zulu girl and in the process unravels a much more mechanical track, a massive mid-tempo thud dominating over delayed cymbal crashes and ghostly vocals. overall - a darker vibe and a truly timeless collection of remixes.

new l.i.e.s!just when we had our doubts about the west coast, los angeles via nyc producer delroy edwards steps up with his debut release for l.i.e.s. musically edwards takes his influences from that barneys ghetto sound with oversaturated 909 shuffling highs, dx bells, 101 filters and ends up making fresh, and yes, melodic ghetto style tracks that somehow get stuck in your head even without vocals. a unique take on a modern classic with the dancefloor in mind.

having first come to prominence in 1999 when he was signed to ltj bukem s good looking label, makoto has steadily, consistently carved out his own groove in the world of drum and bass, with his trademark expansive jazz and soul-inflected workouts garnering critical praise from all corners. having worked with a veritable who s who of the scene, with releases on zinc s bingo beats, fabio s creative source and numerous collaborations with dj marky, makoto now releases his first ep on apollo records.

michael ozone, the character whos just dropped his debut offering for the esp institute this july, is back with a remixed version of his jungle-tuff >perfect systems ep<. on side a, steve summers (a name thats been up in your face over the last year, and one of the key figures in our cousins l.i.e.s. camp) has taken perfect systems for an imperfect ride, jacking it up as expected while keeping the somewhat sinister mood of the original. on the flip, young marco (who has become quite a resident at the esp institute) strips down hetrotopia to its core, letting you realize how a well-programmed track can maintain its melodic and hypnotic sense, even when all thats left is percussion.

born in america, raised in scotland, singing saxophonist amy lyon has been writing and singing music for around 6 years and began playing saxophone at the age of 10. with a love for jazz, funk and soul her influences include ella fitzgerald, otis redding, amy winehouse and erykah badu. with marlon hoffstadt she found an congenial partner to take her songs to the dancefloor. despite his innocent age of 18 years marlon’s productions keep up with those of the well known when it comes to quality. stylistically his sounds are somewhere between pop and house. marlon has that certain “something” that creates its own character and a very distinctive sound. their debut ep “you and a love stoned ghost,” contains four enchanting tracks created by the synergy of marlon’s fresh productions and amy’s energetic voice.
